Donna Steele Recognized for Using Technology to Support Northwest ISD in Meeting Texas House Bill 5 Requirements
Donna Steele, recently retired applications associate coordinator at Northwest Independent School District, has been recognized as an Information Technology Innovator in SunGard K-12 Education’s Lead without Limits Awards program. From nominations from educators and school administrators from across the country, the Northwest ISD administrator was selected as the individual who best leverages technology to innovate school district operations to support student achievement.
The Lead without Limits Awards program recognizes school districts, schools, departments, administrators, and educators that leverage technology to help improve student achievement and/or school or district efficiency. Information Technology Innovators, one of the Lead without Limits Award categories, enhance the educational process with technology. Nominees’ information technology efforts support student achievement and/or improve school/district efficiency.
In his nomination, Adam Feind, the district’s chief technology officer, says Steele pioneered the district’s model for supporting students as they envision their future career and helping the district meet high school graduation requirements, graduation planning, and state testing requirements established by House Bill 5. “Donna has been a Texas innovator in her creation, implementation, and support of the eSchoolPLUS Career Planner module,” Feind says. “She successfully implemented the solution and created a model for other schools in the state to follow.”
Steele, who has focused most of her career supporting the district’s counseling staff, says House Bill 5 was one of the biggest challenges of her career. “In implementing the new graduation requirements in Texas House Bill 5, I was determined to do whatever I could to make this transition easier for the counseling staff, and this is where Career Planner came in,” she says. “My advice to anyone starting a project like this is to make sure that all the pieces of this puzzle are ready to be put together. Just take one piece at a time, making sure it is exactly like you need it to be, and then move to the next piece. The eSchoolPLUS Texas team was a tremendous help throughout this process.”
Frank Lavelle, SunGard K-12 Education’s president and chief executive officer, celebrates Steele’s commitment to innovation and the district’s students and staff. “Donna Steele’s dedication to supporting students, educators, and administrators at Northwest ISD is truly inspirational. Through her determination and innovative thinking, Donna had an incredibly positive impact on the students in her district,” Lavelle says. “We are honored to serve Donna and educators and administrators like her who are helping students realize the greatest possibilities for their life.”
Nominations for the Lead without Limits Awards are accepted through an application form available on SunGard K-12 Education’s website. For guidelines and selection process, please see the Lead without Limits Awards program information online.
