Greater Latrobe School District Launches eSchoolPLUS Family App

Greater Latrobe School DistrictGreater Latrobe School District (GLSD) launched the eSchoolPLUS Family App today during a series of events created to engage students and families with this 21st-century tool that helps support student achievement. The events were developed in collaboration with SunGard K-12 Education, the national software solutions and services provider that created the Family App.

This initiative is the latest of GLSD’s plan to minimize the growing achievement gap between students with access to technology and those whose families, for whatever reason, could not provide such access. In 1997, GLSD was one of the first school districts in the country to implement a one-to-one computing initiative, providing a laptop computer for every junior high school student. The program was later expanded to include the senior high school, which greatly increased the use of technology in authentic, integrated ways to solve problems, complete projects, and creatively extend student achievement.

The early laptop initiative led to the development of the E-Cat Online Academy, which provides students with rigorous and diverse GLSD educational programs in an online learning environment and, most recently, a Bring Your Own Device program that allows students in grades 9 to 12 to use their personal mobile devices to access the school network.

eSchoolPLUS Family AppThe eSchoolPLUS Family App is designed to tighten the feedback loop between schools and families, by putting just-in-time information at the fingertips of students and parents/guardians on their mobile devices. Easy-to-view icons quickly connect families with classwork, schedules, attendance, grades, activities, and more. By displaying data through the lens of action, the Family App helps schools and families partner in supporting student achievement.

Robin Pynos, GLSD’s director of technology, is excited about the opportunity the app offers to tighten the feedback loop between schools and families. “The Family App is designed to put just-in-time information at the fingertips our families so that it can be tightly coupled with their knowledge of what’s going on in their student’s life,” says Pynos. “With those insights, parents and guardians can structure what happens at home to support their student’s success. And, for students, the Family App helps connect them with their education in a way that’s both meaningful and familiar—helping make it easier to manage their assignments and prepare for their assessments.”

In designing the Family App, Chris Everleth, SunGard K-12 Education’s vice president of development, said the company wanted to establish a new paradigm for student information systems. “We wanted to create innovative, action-oriented support for today’s schools,” says Everleth. “The Family App goes beyond providing a static display of repository data to offering information in a way that helps drive effective decision making by students and parents. We’re excited to collaborate with Greater Latrobe School District as one of the first school districts in the nation to roll out this new tool to their families.”

The Family App is available for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on the App Store, for Android devices on Google Play, and for Kindle on Amazon. Greater Latrobe families can download it free from any of these websites.
