Janice O’Brien Recognized for Using Data to Support Student Achievement at Rockford Public Schools 205
Janice O’Brien, software support specialist with Rockford Public Schools 205, has been recognized as a Data All-Star in SunGard K-12 Education’s Lead without Limits Awards program. From nominations from educators and school administrators from across the country, the RPS 205 software support specialist was selected as the individual who best uses data to positively affect student achievement.
The Lead without Limits Awards program recognizes school districts, schools, departments, administrators, and educators that leverage technology to help improve student achievement and/or school or district efficiency. Data All-Stars, one of the Lead without Limits Award categories, use data to positively affect student achievement by applying best practices or innovating processes. Whether their initiatives are impacting one student or hundreds of students, recipients are unlocking student potential by applying insights gained from an analysis of data.
In his nomination, Chris Taskey, the district’s information services coordinator, said O’Brien takes an innovative approach to supporting educational stakeholders with data-driven decision making. “Janice is a Data All-Star for our district because she constantly looks for ways to provide data to our end users so they can make better data-driven decisions,” he said. “Janice leads our support team by pushing eSchoolPLUS to its limits and making sure we get the most value out of what the application has to offer. She’s an extremely valuable asset, and others look to her for support and guidance. When it comes to providing data and teaching others how to get information out of the system, Janice is always willing and goes above and beyond without being asked.”
For example, O’Brien collaborated with the district’s curriculum team on a Board-directed initiative to give all parents and guardians access to their student’s information. In order to achieve this directive, the district rolled out the eSchoolPLUS standards-based gradebook in its elementary schools. The initiative, which had a goal of creating greater transparency and replacing a cumbersome manual process, made evidence of learning and scores available to parents and increased the efficiency and accuracy of score reporting. In support of the project, O’Brien created district processes and guided district users as they gained familiarity with the new system and processes.
Frank Lavelle, SunGard K-12 Education’s president and chief executive officer, celebrates O’Brien’s efforts on behalf of all educational stakeholders. “Through her collaborative spirit and her dogged pursuit of excellence, Janice O’Brien is innovating processes and supporting student achievement at Rockford Public Schools. It’s an honor to serve her as she supports all her district’s educational stakeholders,” says Lavelle. “Through her dedication, Janice is having an inspiringly positive impact on our children.”
