TCEA Update: SIIA Presents Implications of Vision K-20 Technology Assessment

At TCEA, Karen Billings, vice president of the education division of the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), presented the results and implications of a five-year, online assessment of K-12 and postsecondary institutions associated with its Vision K-20 project.

According to Billings, the survey indicates that educators in both K-12 and postsecondary have a vision and desire for integrating technology at a much higher level than they currently have, but need support and assistance to make that happen. She also noted that as technology evolves and more cloud solutions are advanced, there may be new opportunities to reach the ideal goals defined with more cost-effective and less hardware-dependent solutions.

Billings noted, however,  that progress toward an ideal level of implementation will be challenged by the following: (1) finding reliable, ongoing funding to support technology and the staff and support needed to implement it successfully; (2) having leadership at the educational institutions who consider technology implementation a priority and are committed to implementing and maintaining technology at a high level; (3) finding time for educators to learn, implement, and evaluate the use of technology to advance educational goals; and (4) finding new solutions to implement technology (such as the cloud) to help offset how quickly technology becomes obsolete.

Billing encouraged districts to go www.siia.net/visionk20 to participate in this year’s survey, which opened Feb. 6, 2013, in conjunction with Digital Learning Day.

Comments and Reviews
  1. I appreciate the visibility for SIIA’s survey results and the encouragement for your readers to take the survey that’s now open. When they do, they can get a comparison of their results to the national results. We have also added a new question about the use of mobile devices – a current challenge for all institutions.
