Victoria West High School to Participate in the Million T-Shirt March
On May 1, students at Victoria West High School in Victoria Independent School District, Texas, will join students nationwide in taking a stand against bullying during the innovative anti-bullying effort, the Million T-Shirt March. The program, which is now in its third year, is one of the nation’s largest and most ambitious rallies to address this troubling issue affecting almost one in five K-12 students in the United States today.
During the Million T-Shirt March, students and educators unite in wearing event T-shirts to raise awareness of bullying and to encourage students to join in discussions about bullying and its consequences. By selling T-shirts, schools can choose to leverage this program as a fundraiser to obtain financial resources to support in-school anti-bullying programs.
On the days preceding the Million T-shirt March at Victoria West High School, a series of anti-bullying events will focus students’ attention on this issue. On April 28 and 29, members of the school’s newly formed Anti-Bullying Club will coordinate an anti-bullying pledge drive; those who take the pledge will be entered to win one of the T-shirts. Plans are in the works to have the pledges in the form of peace symbols that can be used to decorate the commons area of the school. On April 30, all students will watch an anti-bullying video in the morning and T-shirt winners will be announced that afternoon. The week of activities will conclude with winners wearing the shirts for the March on Thursday, May 1.
Victoria Independent School District won the T-shirts during a recent SunGard K-12 Education User Group Conference. The school district uses SunGard K-12’s eSchoolPLUS software to manage student information and support student achievement and eFinancePLUS to manage critical financial, procurement, payroll, and personnel functions. Every year, SunGard K-12 and its software users across the United States meet at regional and national conferences to share best practices and be updated on the latest advances to their software.
“During the Million T-Shirt March, Victoria West High School will join the battle cry against bullying in our schools,” says Lori Clark, SunGard K-12 marketing manager. “Through this effort, SunGard K-12 Education hopes that we are spreading the word about this innovative initiative and nurturing this important dialogue in our customers’ schools.”
